Mabow Technology

Making the elders’ day a good day, everyday.

Elderly

Enterprise/business philosophy and objectives of the founder

“To provide a convenient tool to those who care greatly about their elderly relatives, fulfilling their wish to get in touch any time” was founder Wei Yang Gu’s original idea. His later creation, Mabow Technology, has developed simple video equipment suitable for use by the elderly, making video calling as easy as watching TV. Simply by pressing a button on their remote control, they can see the family and friends so familiar to them.

History of development/business model

While living with his grandmother, founder Wei Yang Gu found that many elderly people in fact very much want to learn how to use video calling software in order to see their children more often. However, products on the market still have high barriers that largely prevent elderly people from learning to use them.

Because of this, Wei Yang Gu, an expert in electromechanics, started to think about how to develop a simple video call software for use by elderly people that would be as easy as turning on the TV. Using a TV as equipment for a video phone call would allow elderly people to see their children and friends on the TV screen by simply turning it on and pressing a button. They could happily enjoy the fun of technology and no longer need to worry about a complicated interface.

This TV box is called “Mabow Gate” and is divided into six-month rental service and one-off purchase plans. Using an app, people can talk to their elderly relatives via TV.

At the same time, Mabow Technology was also designing apps for a “secretary service” and “Mabow Assistant”, allowing distant children and grandchildren to chat with their elderly relatives at any time to share anti-scam information, activity arrangements and all sorts of daily life reminders. In this way, they could become instant, remote “Little Secretaries” for their relatives.

Creating social value/mitigating social problems

A survey revealed that those who used Mabow Technology “Little Secretaries” were all very concerned about the opportunities their relatives had for chatting, as well as the fact that older people generally wanted to talk about their children. These insights represent that demand for this service definitely existed, and it so happened that Mabow Technology was able to fill the gap.

Having visited more than 30 communities up to now, Mabow has found that this demand continues to increase. Therefore, from 2015, Mabow has started discussing cooperation with enterprises and looks forward to its service extending into even more households to expand the organisation’s influence.
